So, where did all this begin?
I can't remember a time when I wasn't thinking about other uses for objects... Clothes basket?? I think not... but a wagon, a car, a spaceship... now we're talking!! When I look at something, I always play the "what else?" game to see how many other purposes I can dream up for that object (or pile of objects if you peek in my craft room or garage!!) I've always been a crafty type, and I've always felt the need to alter things... whether that meant chopping the hair off my Barbies, drawing on the walls, painting rocks, making collages out of found objects and repurposed cast offs, repainting or redesigning furniture, making original art, customizing clothing or jewelry... you name it, I've probably tried it.
I grew up in Indiana... times were simple then, and I had a lot of time to exercise my imagination and daydream my way through childhood. Then I spent my young adulthood in California, soaking in the eclectic mix of cultures and working in cool creative places like The J. Paul Getty Trust and Twentieth Century Fox, where I had the privilege of being around a wide variety of art, from the Masters to street artists and everything in between. In the mid 90s I moved to Austin and settled in to a whole different vibe, while raising a couple kiddos with my high school sweetheart, and doing my best to Keep Austin Weird. I spent a few years as a hairstylist / colorist / makeup artist / educator, and had the opportunity to mingle with some wonderful, artistic, multi-talented and overall amazing stylists, celebrities, fashion designers, musicians, photographers, film makers and artists. I've always had a soft spot for vintage, and a knack for display, so for a few years I rented space in an antique / vintage mall. But then I was bitten by the jewelry design bug.... I jumped in with both feet, began collecting a ton of raw materials, started putting things together rather organically... I rarely sketch or plan, it just happens. And I'm having a blast!
Creative, or just downright kooky, maybe an even mix of both.... that's me. I'm Detrian, and I'm glad you stumbled into my online workshop. It's a place where I display (and sometimes sell) all the neat things I make out of other really neat things. You will find plenty of jewelry, and accessories, and items for your home, even artwork and experiments.... so keep checking back as things are always being added. As time goes on I will be adding some tutorials, and some supplies too, so that you can have fun at home and give jewelry design a try if you like. There's also a blog page, where I'll be keeping you up on trends, or just rambling on and on like I tend to do.... so go on, take a look around, and stop by again anytime. You're always welcome!
